Google throws in the towel with Chrome OS and will merge it with Android

Chrome OS wanted to be Google’s entry into the desktop operating system market after dominating the smartphone market, however in recent years this is a market where the trend is convergence in the sense of getting different types of devices to share the same operating system, there we have the examples of Microsoft with Windows 10 or Canonical with Ubuntu.

This, together with the fact of its high dependency on an online connection and on the chrome application/extension system with high dependency on the cloud in many cases has meant that Chrome OS has had very little acceptance beyond certain market niches such as the educational sector. In addition, Google itself made moves that were at least strange, such as the launch of the “professional” Pixel C tablet with Android instead of Chrome OS, leaving the company’s commitment to this operating system up in the air.

To date, it was not understood how Google, which owns the most widely used mobile operating system in the world, had not decided to adapt Android to the desktop and laptop market and be able to take advantage of the catalog of applications and the entire community. However, better late than never and it seems that finally Google will abandon Chrome OS by merging it with Android to be able to offer an operating system adapted to all types of devices, including laptops and desktops, with access to the application store.

There is no date yet for the merger nor do we know when it will be available.
