The new charging animation for Google Pixel phones with Android 12

Android 12 is the biggest visual update to the hit operating system we’ve seen in recent years, and in addition to bigger revisions like Material You, includes many new animations. One of them, which isn’t immediately noticeable however, is the new charging animation that appears on the display when the Google Pixel phone is turned off. If you connect a Pixel phone that is switched off to the mains, once it starts to charge you will see the battery indicator followed by the charge level as a percentage.

Here’s what the new reload animation will look like

On that percentage, starting from Android 12, it will be possible to observe an animation that represents a ripple effect. This will have a low frame rate, but will be comparable to what you see when the phone is on. From Beta 1 onwards, there are several “wave” animations that show the state of charge, although when the power is on, the wave corresponds to the characteristic accent colors of systems based on Material You. These colors, unfortunately , they are not very successful in this type of animation. It’s not entirely clear when it appeared, but industry experts first saw it in Android 12 Beta 3, and it didn’t appear to be present on a Pixel 5 with Beta 2.

Probably no one pays any attention to things like this when the phone is off, but it’s still an aesthetically pleasing change. Instead of a static number, you can now see clearly cases where the phone is not charging; this could be especially useful if you are using a wireless charger. Apart from malfunctions, of which it could be a useful signal, it is simply an aesthetic function that enriches the experience of using the phone.
