Technical analysis of Final Fantasy VII Remake highlights the texture problems.

Those lovely geeks at the Digital Foundry have uploaded a technical review of Final Fantasy VII Remake, and it’s well worth a look. The team is impressed by most of the game, praising its strong performance, art direction, detail, and amazing story scenes. But, as we pointed out in our 8/10 launch review, Remake suffers from very strange ambient texture issues in certain areas. They are often so bad that we even write a separate report on them, complete with screenshots.

Like us, the Digital Foundry is wondering if it’s some kind of graphical glitch. If it is, we hope it gets fixed, because while we all know graphics aren’t everything in a game, these textures definitely distract from an otherwise gorgeous PlayStation 4 title.

Feature: Three reasons why PS4’s Ratchet and Ratchet Remake could be radical

Interestingly, the team says they tried playing on a PS4 Pro with an SSD installed, to see if they could force better textures… but nothing changed apart from the speed at which low-quality textures loaded.

In fact, the textures are the only point of criticism that the Digital Foundry has…everything else is top notch. Square Enix is no stranger to creating lovely looking games, and Final Fantasy VII Remake is another beauty. Well, for the most part.
