Microsoft ventures into the big clusters

This new operating system will be called “Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003” and is already in the early stages with a Beta 2 already available. Bill Gates himself will present it during the Supercomputing conference to be held before the end of the year.

Microsoft intends to improve the functionality and ease of administration and development of supercomputing systems. To support this new project, Microsoft, together with 10 universities around the world, has established a supercomputing institute in each of them. With this experience they hope to launch their solutions for public and private markets around the world.

Microsoft believes that large server systems are now beginning to approach less demanding markets and that therefore it is time to launch a product that they have been developing for the last 5 years. We will see how this new proposal absorbs a market as closed as that of HPC (High Performance Computing).
