GameStop announces that PRO members will get their first dibs on any online stock of the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S consoles.
Many gamers have had a hard time getting next-gen consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S. Stores like GameStop and Amazon have had a hard time keeping the consoles stocked, with resellers and eagle-eyed fans picking them up almost instantly once stocks are available. To help combat this, GameStop has announced that it will allow professional members to get the first data on console stocks online.
Despite the shortage, companies like Nvidia and GameStop have managed to post net increases in earnings for the first quarter of 2021. This is largely a consequence of the pandemic that saw increased interest and spending in the games industry, which probably also contributed to the console shortage. GameStop made the announcement of the new professional member benefit through its official Instagram account, although it did not provide many details on how exactly it will work. Regardless, having more opportunities to get their hands on one of the new consoles is a pretty big benefit that professional members have access to.

In particular, the post mentions that professional members get early access to online console sales, so it doesn’t appear that members will be able to take advantage of the new benefit in person. The move is likely part of GameStop’s efforts to shift to online sales that prompted the company to hire former Amazon executives. This new online change has also prompted the company to say that it will begin selling NFT and will close many of its physical locations. However, since consoles are in such limited supply, it makes sense to keep stocks online so customers can access them no matter where they are.
Of course, if GameStop doesn’t introduce some security measures, the new benefit may instead make it easier for resellers to get their hands on the consoles, as they will have even less competition for them. Resellers have been a serious problem for the new generation of consoles, and they have only intensified the consequences of the shortage to the point that even Jim Ryan publicly commented on the situation. Hopefully, GameStop has something in place to make sure that people who pay for a Pro Membership actually get a chance to purchase the consoles with this new perk.
