Final Fantasy VII Remake Adds Some Whole New Areas To Midgar

The big city

It’s not exactly a surprise at this point, but Final Fantasy VII Remake will introduce players to some entirely new areas within Midgar. As the game takes place exclusively within the city walls, Square Enix has had to expand the location significantly. Not only are locations from the original title being developed, but new sections of Midgar can also be explored.

Director Tetsuya Nomura explains in a recent development video: “I thought it would be nice to open up some of the locations, so players could explore more of those places that they wanted to see when they played the original. People wanted to get into this building or see those facilities. So I think he’ll feel even more for Midgar than he did the first time.”

In fact, one of these new locations has just been revealed. The latest in-game screenshots show a place called Corneo’s Coliseum… Don Corneo’s own fighting arena.

It will be interesting to see how big Midgar is in Final Fantasy VII Remake. We already know that the city will not be completely open, but we hope that it will not be just a series of super linear corridors. “In Final Fantasy VII Remake you can’t go everywhere in the city, but the area you can walk around has been greatly expanded,” says Nomura.
