CD Projekt Red gave a presentation during the Pareto Securities Gaming Seminar and did not mince words. They call Cyberpunk 2077 a true blockbuster game that is even more ambitious than The Witcher 3.
During the retaliatory eight-hour Pareto Securities Gaming Seminar, many companies discussed future games and plans. One of these developers is CD Projekt Red. The studio’s CEO, Adam Kicinski, spoke about Cyberpunk 2077, among other things. It would have been nice if the best man finally told me when the game is in stores, but we probably have to wait until E3 for that.
What he dares to say is that Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be a great game. He calls it a true blockbuster that is even more ambitious than the Witcher 3 and therefore should also be seen as their new Witcher 3, with which he actually indirectly says that Cyberpunk 2077 should at least be just as good. The world, according to Kicinski, is completely handmade, detailed and full of open-ended gameplay.
Cyberpunk is our new Witcher 3, but even more ambitious. Our goal is to establish a new blockbuster franchise from the beginning. We work new universe, futuristic universe. We believe it’s very appealing to players, not only RPG players — but this is true RPG, like Witcher, like Witcher 3, for mature audiences. It’s handcrafted, detailed, of course open-world, with open-ended gameplay,
Not only does Kicinski talk about how ambitious the whole project is, he reiterates that it is very important that the player comes first and that it is very important to deliver a good quality product. This is something he also said a while ago during an interview where he also spoke about his view on loot boxes.
Great game, more ambitious than Witcher 3, and we believe that we can aim more ambitious business goals as well — of course, still having gamer-centric focus and quality focus as a main priority.
Kicinski also says that Gwent, the Free To Play card game based on the card game in the Witcher games, is doing better and better. Lately, the developer has made a lot of money on this game through GOG, the platform on which the game can be played on PC. Gwent is not playable on Steam, but Kicinski has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will be available for purchase on Valve’s platform.
Recently, in the first half of 2017, we enjoyed a really huge increase of our own internal sales via GOG distribution channel, “Kicinski says.” A big part of that was coming from the Gwent project.
Finally, the best man had to announce that there will be no Witchter 4 for the time being. From the beginning it was intended to be a trilogy and it succeeded. He doesn’t want to say that CD Projekt Red will never do anything with the franchise again, but for now the focus is completely on Gwent and Cyberpunk 2077:
We can’t create Witcher 4, because that was a trilogy from the beginning. No one said that one day we won’t decide to develop something in the Witcher universe. But now we’re focusing on Cyberpunk and Gwent.
If you want to hear it all from the man’s own mouth, you have to fast forward to 3 hours and 16 minutes in the video below, then the presentation of CD Projekt Red begins. Cyberpunk 2077 has been in development for years and we still have seen almost nothing of it. Everything we do know can be read in this beautiful feature from Sven. The developer also kept their jaw tight for years, until the game’s Twitter account came back to life at the beginning of this year. Hopefully this means that the game will see the light of day this year and that we will finally be able to shake it!
