Apple will have to change or charger in Europe: the new EU agreement

This thing has been in the air for far too long and the pandemic has probably slowed its natural course, but ultimately it is happening. Part of the organs ofEuropean Union have decided on a new regulation that will oblige smartphones, and also other similar devices such as tablets, to have the same charger which also implies the same ports on the device. We talk about USB-C and of course it is easy to think of Apple.

Apple has been using its own physical port for years Lightning and this decision will have a strong impact in Europe. Somehow he will have to adapt to that request if he wants to continue sell their devices in the EU. The US company had tried in every way to obstruct this decision also by explaining how this request would somehow slow down innovation.

Apple and the new chargers

The words of the Commissioner for the Internal Market of the European Union, Thierry Breton: “A common charger is common sense for the many electronic devices in our daily life. European consumers will be able to use a single charger for all their portable electronic devices: an important step to increase convenience and reduce waste ”.

This agreement, albeit provisional since there will be a further step later in time, obliges manufacturers like Apple to adapt by autumn 2024. In essence, the next generation of devices will continue to come out with the same ports as now, but for the next generation that may already be happening. It will be interesting to see how the market will change and how producers will react to all of this.
